Starting a Conversation about Baby Loss in the Veterinary Profession

When I first found out I was pregnant I decided I wanted to write a blog about staying active during pregnancy. When we lost the baby this was another part of life that wasn’t going to happen. But I realised that didn’t mean I couldn’t still write. This was the start of This Vet Runs,… Read More Starting a Conversation about Baby Loss in the Veterinary Profession

Imposter Syndrome in Pregnancy Loss

I don’t believe that there are worse ways to lose a baby. I have never listened to someone else’s story and thought that it was worth less based on whether the pregnancy was planned, or how many weeks they were. In fact, I’ve always thought a molar pregnancy must be one of the hardest and… Read More Imposter Syndrome in Pregnancy Loss

One Year After A Miscarriage

A year ago today, we heard the words no couple ever wants to hear, “I’m really sorry guys, but there’s no heart beat”. I’m a veterinary surgeon, I see nature run its course every single day. I know not to get my hopes up. But how do you process finding out you’re pregnant without considering… Read More One Year After A Miscarriage

Keeping Your Head Below Water

I never learnt to swim properly as a child. Don’t get me wrong, I did learn how not to drown (important life skill): I mastered both frantic doggy-paddle and old lady head-three-foot out-of-the-water style! But I never learnt how to swim properly. So in 2016 after qualifying as a vet, I decided to have adult… Read More Keeping Your Head Below Water

Why we need to talk about miscarriage

When you have a miscarriage, it feels like you are the only woman in the entire world who can’t just sneeze and pop a baby out of nowhere. You venture out, and suddenly everywhere you look are babies, and baby things. Every woman you walk past instantly sprouts a baby bump. Once quirky cafes morph… Read More Why we need to talk about miscarriage

Returning to Running After Miscarriage

For something that started out as difficult and at times gruelling, running has become absolutely vital to my mental health. The physical challenge of running is a stark and welcome change from the mental and emotional challenges of life. For that short period, the running is all-encompassing; I haven’t the energy or the brain power… Read More Returning to Running After Miscarriage

The Beginning

In April 2018 I had a charity place to run the best marathon in the world – The London Marathon. I am an amateur runner, and this was set to be my first ever marathon – quite a step up from the one and only half I’d done before! I had incredible support from friends,… Read More The Beginning

I’m not quite sure how it happened, but this morning was one of those runs where everything just came together! 🏃‍♀️ I was feeling so grateful for being able to go to parkrun after a quiet night shift, on a beautiful sunny morning, that I just ran to feel and enjoyed every moment 🌞 And somehow I ran my fastest parkrun since 2017! Not sure how, but I’m over the moon!! ☺️ I can go to bed now, full of parkrun happiness. It makes such a difference on nights when you can slot in a little bit of you-time. . . . #parkrun #parkrunuk #rushcliffeparkrun #parkrunPB #ukrunchat #runr #runhappy #thisgirlcan #thisgirlcanrun #womensrunning #triathlontraining #triathlonlife #trilikeagirl #nightvet #nightshiftworker #vetsofinstagram #veterinariansofinstagram #vetlife #teamvet #eccvet #vetschool #thisvetruns
Today’s challenge has been fitting some exercise in around “wedmin”!! If you’ve not heard this term.. it’s used to describe the unexpected amount of admin that comes with planning a wedding 😂 We put our winter gear on and ran 5k to the printers to sign off the proof for the Save The Dates 💒 Two good things ticked off the list before I start nights this evening. . . . #runcommute #ukrunchat #wedmin #wedminwednesday #runr #vetlife #vetsofinstagram #vetsofinsta #triathlontraining #triathlonlife #teamvet #teamvetruns #vetstudent #vetschool #coupleswhoruntogether #weddingplanning #runnersofinstagram #runningmotivation #thisgirlcanrun #nottinghamrunner #womensrunning
I’m working in a practice today that diverts the phones and shuts up shop for an hour at lunchtime! 😮 Barring emergencies of course, this meant we could actually relax and take a proper break. I can’t believe the difference it made mentally! . I used this protected time to pop my yoga mat down in the consult room and take 20 minutes to do a little yoga 🧘🏼‍♀️ After a long run last night and a double swim/bike the day before my body was crying out for a good stretch. It sounds simple, but taking your breaks really does make a huge difference. It would be great if more workplaces adopted this policy - and speaks volumes about the care for their staff here at this lovely practice ☺️. So nice to say hi to @molthesvn as well halfway through my yoga!! . . #teamvet #veterinarysurgeon #vetsofinsta #vetsofinstagram #vetlife #vetnurse #vetnurselife #vetstudent #yogainspiration #yogapractice #stethoscopedownyogaup #vetyogi #wellvet #beginneryogi #ukrunchat #triathlonlife #pinkscrubs #takeabreak
My BEFORE face, contemplating succumbing to the head torch for the first time this winter.. and getting myself back to run club. I’m finding motivation tough with the dark nights and chilly weather 🥶. . But I DID IT! Motivated by my @wellvetweekend buddy @liz.barton.vet who is encouraging us all to commit to 20 minutes of exercise a day in December. Like an advent calendar (but not as fun). I managed 6.5 miles and ticked off my long run for the week ☺️ Speeding home for pasta bake and a glass of 🍷. Anyone else begrudgingly embraced the season of dark head torch runs? . . . #runr #runhappy #grumpyrunner #ukrunchat #unilite #headtorch #womensrunning #triathletelife #runlikeagirl #thisgirlcan #thisgirlcanrun #teamvet #wellvet #wellvetweekend #runclub #beginnertriathlete #runningmotivation #runnersofinstagram
Enjoying the winter sun today with a spin on our bikes ☺️ Double session, with swimming at tri club this evening. Training seems to be a bit all or nothing at the moment in between shifts. But it’s better than nothing and nothing! 🏊‍♀️ 🚲 🏃‍♀️ Finding it a real struggle fitting it all in in daylight. Maybe I just need to embrace the head torch 🔦 and suck it up!! . . Brrr! With night shifts, day shifts and being poorly I’ve not managed much running this week. So it was a real treat to wake up to the most beautiful frost ❄️ Rushcliffe park could not have looked prettier! It might have been chilly, but it was definitely one of the loveliest parkrun’s I’ve done ☺️ It’s a great feeling coming home to a hot bath having been out and done it. . . . #parkrun #parkrunuk #parkrunday #winterrunning #frostymorning #rushcliffepark #rushcliffeparkrun #ukrunchat #runr #runhappy #garminuk #garmingirl #thisgirlcan #thisgirlcanrun #runlikeagirl #chillymorning #vet #vetlife #teamvet #vetsofinstagram #teamvetruns
